10 Little Things That Make a Huge Christmas Difference

Ah… the Christmas season. For most Christians, it is a season of mixed feelings. There are activities to plan, decorating to complete and gifts to buy.  And for those with children still in school, there can be the added stress of class parties, teacher gifts and Christmas programs.  It’s enough to wear anyone out! When we add into this busy mix the many activities that our church holds, we can easily become overwhelmed, overburdened, and over-focused (on all of the wrong things).  We KNOW that Christmas is about the hope that came in the form of Emmanuel (God with us), but sometimes it is easy to lose track of that “good news of great joy” that the season is truly about.
What are we to do?

Sometimes, the answer to keeping our focus on Christ during this busy season can be found in a number of small activities that help refocus our hearts.  Not big stuff . . . rather, small things that can easily be done and serve to bring our thoughts back to the amazing gift that was given in the small town of Bethlehem so many years ago.
Recently, Christianity.about.com published an article titled “10 Ways to Keep Christ in Christmas.” In it are contained not huge changes to our lifestyle nor things that are impossible to fit in during the month of December. Rather, the article lists ten simple actions that can easily be done, and have a big impact on your focus. The article is definitely worth a full read – but the “quick list” is here:

    1. Give God one very special gift just from you to Him
Perhaps the “gift” of forgiveness, time or sacrifice might be exactly what He wants from you this Christmas
    2. Set aside a special time to read the Christmas story
Ideally, this is done as a family in order to refocus the thoughts of everyone in your household
    3. Set up a nativity scene in your home
Having that visual reminder of Christ’s birth can often keep us focused on the true meaning of Christmas
    4. Plan a project of good will this Christmas
It’s not hard to find someone who could benefit from your input in their life – simply look around
    5. Take a group Christmas caroling in a nursing home or a children’s hospital
Get your friends and family involved and bring the good news of Christmas to someone who may be alone this season
    6. Give a surprise gift of service to each member of your family
Sometimes serving your family can be the most rewarding of all of the Christmas joys
    7. Set aside a time of family devotions on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning
This is especially great if you have children as it helps them focus on Christ before the festivities begin
    8. Attend a Christmas church service together with your family
Hearts are truly softened when you take time to worship as a family in the midst of the busy season
    9. Send Christmas cards that convey a spiritual message
It may be that someone on your list could use the reminder of the true reason for celebrating Christmas
    10. Write a Christmas letter to a missionary
This is a great way to involve your children and teach them the importance of missions while blessing someone who may be far away from home at Christmas

We have been given the greatest gift of mankind in the person of Jesus and want to share that with our children.
