Whether in the classroom, on the court or field, or in their administrative roles, HCA staff engage their work from a soundly biblical perspective. About Mr. Adams

Mr. Steve Adams, with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics (minor in Physics) and a Masters Degree in Educational Administration, has been teaching for 40 years. He currently teaches in the STEM department. Mr. Adams has attended international educational technology conferences (ISTE and FETC) and has presented sessions at FETC. He has been instrumental in the development and implementation of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum at HCA’s elementary and upper school.

About Ms. Beazley

Beverly graduated summa cum laude from the University of Missouri-Kansas City with a BA in History and she has completed 24 credit hours towards her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Most recently, Beverly taught at Grace Christian Academy in Shawnee. She also had the privilege of home educating her three children, all of whom are now in college and passionate about following Jesus. In addition, Beverly is involved in Children’s Ministry at a local church and has enjoyed teaching in Sunday School and Awana for many years. Beverly’s desire is to honor the Lord in her teaching and she feels incredibly blessed to be able to work with tomorrow’s leaders in a godly environment.

Mr. Anthony Brenchley serves as our Director of Information Technology—aka, our “Computer Guy.” He manages network administration, technology implementation, and IT support for both campuses. Mrs. Briley has over 10 years of experience in teaching and administration, along with serving on the school board. Meaghen has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with certification in Early Childhood Special Education from Emporia State University. She has a passion for young families and serving alongside them as they begin this exciting new chapter. Her goal is for students to begin laying a foundation in Christ that will last a lifetime. Meaghen has been part of Heritage since 2009. The preschool in 2013 had 32 students and today over 100 students are served. The preschool not only provides a solid education and safe environment, but a place where children can learn about Jesus Christ and His love for them.

Her passion is to help students develop a lifelong love of learning. Lynda’s goal is to be a “student” of her students. Hannah Kothmann graduated Magna cum Laude from the University of Central Missouri with a degree in vocal music education. Hannah sings with the Kansas City Symphony Chorus, and is active in the music ministry at her church. She has a passion for music and children, and is thrilled to teach junior high and high school choir, as well as junior high Bible at HCA. Her goal as an educator is to encourage her students to do everything to the best of their ability for God’s glory. Hannah was recently married to Andrew (March 2019).

Sonya lives in Olathe with her husband, Kevin, and four children, Connor (12th), Camille (10th), Caelyn (7th) and Courtney (K). Jeni completed her undergraduate degree at Baylor University, and then attended the University of Kansas to pursue a graduate degree in School Psychology. She then worked in the Blue Valley School District as a School Psychologist for 9 years, at which point she decided to stay at home with her two children (who are now 7- and 5-years-old). While attending KU and while working in Blue Valley, Jennifer did a lot of work in the areas of girl friendships and bullying. Additionally, while staying at home with her children, Jennifer volunteered with a mentorship program for 2 years during which she oversaw a program of high school girls mentoring middle school girls. Jennifer greatly values mentorship and has a passion for helping girls to experience true and healthy community and to become who God designed them to be.

Mrs. Franklin has over 35 years of experience in teaching. Judy has a Master of Arts in Education from MidAmerica Nazarene University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Nebraska with emphasis in Child Development, Early Childhood and Elementary Education. She has completed post graduate work in reading instruction. In 2006 she was honored by KAIRS as a Kansas Distinguished Teacher. Judy’s passion is assisting all children to become proficient readers. Her goal with every student is to instill a life-long love of words, stories and books. Judy began at HCA in 2015 as Reading Specialist.

Her passion is coming along side young families and partnering with them as they enter into the school age years. Mrs. Michele Honeyman has had over 22 years of teaching experience. Mrs. Honeyman has a bachelors in elementary education from the University of Kansas. She also has 50+ hours of graduate work completed in elementary education. Her passion is to help students attain a Christ-centered education while they develop a biblical worldview. Her goal is to help her students acquire a strong Christian character, partnering with parents as they raise their children up to be ambassadors for Christ. Mrs. Honeyman started in 2005 and is our First Grade teacher.

James Hoskins serves as assistant dean for the middle school. He teaches 12th grade Bible (Worldview and Apologetics). James is also a published writer in philosophy and Christian worldview. He has recently contributed essays to ChristAndPopCulture.com (2013–present), the Christian Research Journal (2016), and the book Utmost Ongoing: Reflections on the Legacy of Oswald Chambers (Discovery House Publishers, 2017). In his spare time, James enjoys writing and playing music. This is his 10th year at HCA.

Mrs. Houske is a seasoned educator. She has her undergraduate degree from K-State and her Master of Education from Mid-America Nazarene University. Mrs. Houske has recently been serving in early education ministry. She is marred to Grant and has two children who attend HCA.

Mrs. Houske comes to HCA with 20 years of teaching experience. She received her undergraduate degree from Kansas State University as well as a Master’s Degree from MidAmerica Nazarene University. She taught first and third grade in Olathe Public Schools for 13 years. She has also worked for Lawrence Virtual School as an Education Consultant. In addition, Mrs. Houske has worked as an ELL teacher and taught at a Parents’ Day Out program in Olathe. Mrs. Houske’s passion is to help her students fall more in love with Jesus every day. She loves listening to their sweet voices as they recite Bible verses they have memorized. Mrs. Houske has been working at HCA as a Lead Teacher in the preschool since 2017.

About Mrs. Kingery

Mrs. Kingery joined HCA in February 2017 as Business Administrator. She earned her degree from McPherson College and has worked in accounting/human resources for 20+ years. She currently handles all of HCA’s financial matters including budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and accounting duties such as accounts payable and payroll. Heather also manages our staff benefits. Her greatest pleasure is spending time at her children’s various activities and traveling as a family.

Since graduating college, Haley has been blessed to be working with talented and wonderful kids at HCA. Outside of teaching drama and acting at Heritage, Haley works as a director and stage manager for StageRight Performing Arts, participates in musical theatre around Kansas City, and is a barista at Starbucks! She believes teaching theatre and the fine arts not only encourages students to embrace their creative side, but to also become more comfortable with necessary social skills and development—things we often take for granted.

Mrs. Lewis has 17 years of elementary teaching experience. Marla has a Master of Education with an emphasis in Reading from Northeastern Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Tulsa University. She loves to introduce students to books by exploring authors, genres and series with each class. Marla’s goal is to help match students with books that they love and promote a lifelong love of reading. About Ms. Lin

Yaoli was born in Taiwan and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. After high school, she completed her undergraduate and graduate studies in Education at Ohio State University. Upon completing her degrees, Yaoli worked as a resource teacher in public schools for 10 years in addition to teaching an adult class in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). Her favorite subject is Social Studies because she loves to learn about diverse cultures and languages. In her non-working hours, Yaoli and her family enjoy being part of Emmanuel Chinese Baptist Church.

About Mr. Lukianuk

Mr. Rick Lukianuk (“Mr. L”) is a summa cum laude, Phi Bet Kappa graduate of Duke University and the Duke University Law School with a dual undergraduate major in History and Religion. His first career focused on International Law where he served as VP and General Counsel of a Fortune 500 corporation. While serving on the Board of a Christian school he discovered his passion for passing God’s wisdom down to the next generation and HCA is the third school he has helped to lead. In addition to serving as Head of School, he teaches two law classes—Intro to Law and Honors Law 2—which are focused on teaching critical thinking, problem solving and life skills including personal finance, negotiation, the global marketplace and God’s sovereignty in all things.

A Lawrence native, Ben has spent four years ministering to teenagers in both church and school settings. After graduating Boston College with his B.A. in Philosophy, he spent two years teaching at the Bear Creek School in Redmond, Washington. There he served the high school humanities department, teaching world history, rhetoric, philosophy, theology and church history. He and his wife Maddie love hiking, board games and making music together.

Floyd Mashek teaches middle and high school physical education and strength training courses. Mr. Mashek has spent the last 11 years globetrotting around the USA following his wife’s career and is excited to be back in his home state. He is in his ninth year of teaching, including five years of physical education and three years of business education. In his free time Mr. Mashek enjoys playing and watching sports and is a huge St. Louis Cardinals and Blues fan. He also loves spending time with his wife Kera and son Drake.

About Mr. Miller

Mr. Miller serves as director of professional development and college guidance for HCA. He went to school at Liberty University in Virginia, so many of the places he teaches about he has seen and can relate those experiences to the students. His uses a cooperative teaching style in the classroom so the students can learn by making projects, discussion and acting out history. He has an M.A. in history and has been a teacher for 22 years.

Physical Education Instructor

Mr. Olson has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Kansas State Teacher’s College, Emporia, Kansas. His teaching career spans over 45 years, the majority as a physical education instructor. He also enjoys coordinating field days, Jump Rope for Heart and other fun events. Brian’s goal as a P.E. teacher is to lead young people in being physically active while developing Christ-like character. Brian has also coached varsity basketball for over 25 years as well as other sports. He was awarded Coach of the Year in the Western Reserve Conference. He started teaching at Heritage Christian Academy in 1992 (Berean prior to 2010) as the elementary P.E. teacher. He also teaches the preschool Mini Movers class.

About Mr. Parr

Mr. Parr serves as chaplain for HCA. In this role he coordinates weekly chapel services, leads the student worship team, provides biblical guidance to students and faculty, teaches Bible classes, and oversees biblical worldview integration into curriculum school-wide. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Kansas. He has since been in two local bands and a professional Octet called Octarium. He has also had the opportunity to sing with various touring artists. Jason is proud to have been leading in full-time church ministry for over 21 years. He is currently pursuing his Master of Divinity Degree from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City. He is married to Marsha Parr, and together they have three children: Simon, Elise and Juliana.

About Mrs. Parr

Marsha Parr serves as dean of faculty and curriculum for the upper school. She also teaches 9th grade and 12th grade honors literature and composition. She graduated with Highest Distinction from the University of Kansas where she earned both her Bachelors and Masters of Curriculum and Instruction in English and Social Studies education. While at KU, she ran Varsity Cross Country for the Jayhawks and participated in University Theater. Mrs. Parr began her teaching career at Blue Valley High school where she taught Honors and Advanced Placement English and coached cross country for several years. She and her husband, Jason, have three children who attend HCA, and they are all thrilled to be a part of the HCA family.

About Mr. Schenk

Mr. Schenk serves as dean of administration for HCA. In this role he functions as activities/athletics director, facilities coordinator, dean of students, accreditation supervisor, and scheduling supervisor. He has over 28 years of experience in Christian education, both teaching and coaching. Schenk has coached soccer at the high school (19 years) and college level (7 years: Dordt) and holds an Advanced National Diploma from the United Soccer Coaches. He also coached HS basketball (10 years) and track (5 years) in Pittsburgh, PA. Dave and his wife Liz have two grown children and two that currently attend HCA. A native Canadian, he is now a U.S. citizen and has lived in the states since graduating from college.

About Mr. Schwepler

Nathan is familiar to many HCA families as he has served as a teacher at the East Campus (and Westminster before that) since 2002. He holds an AA in practical theology from Christ for the Nations Institute in Dallas, TX, and a BS in Elementary Education from Sterling College. He taught 15 groups of third grade students before shifting to sixth grade. Nathan is beginning his second year of teaching sixth grade history and English at HCA. Nathan and his wife, Rachel, have five children.

Elementary Principal

Mrs. Sievert has over 25 years of experience in education including administration, teaching, and serving on school boards. Kathy has a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from William Jewell College. Her passion is to help scholars to know Jesus and to see them transformed by the gospel. In addition, her goal is to partner with parents and teachers to create an educational environment in which each child can realize his or her academic, social and spiritual potential. Kathy has worked in administration at Heritage since 2000 (Westminster prior to 2010) and is our Elementary School Principal. Notable among her accomplishments is forming the “Culture of Kindness.” The Culture was developed to teach the gospel of Jesus to our children and to support a calm, focused learning environment. This initiative has been very successful as a discipleship tool and was awarded a Commendation from the ACSI.

Matt Stephens is a graduate of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (M.Div. ’11) and Southwest Baptist University (B.A., Communication Arts, ’04). After serving God in a variety of contexts including non-profit work, technical sales and pastoral ministry, Matt joined the HCA staff as Communications Manager in July 2017. In this role, Matt’s responsibilities include school-wide marketing and communication strategy, brand management, social media management, graphic design, web design, public relations, and editorial oversight for all non-curricular publications. He recently completed the development of the school’s website and plans to teach courses in graphic and web design starting in Fall 2019. Matt lives in Lenexa, KS with his wife and three children.

Aaron Suber serves as the 9th–11th grade Bible teacher at HCA. He also serves as an Assistant Pastor at Redeemer Presbyterian Church where he works with the high school youth. About Mrs. Vantine

Mrs. Vantine has a B.S. in Chemistry and worked as an environmental chemist, then as a nuclear chemist. She has also worked for Tri-Fuels, a research facility, working on ethanol production from biomass. In the classroom, Mrs. Vantine feels that lab work is one of the most crucial elements in a chemistry curriculum. Therefore, she spends approximately 25% of class time in lab.

About Miss Werbin

Miss Werbin graduated summa cum laude with degrees in both Biology and Chemistry. Throughout her education she was involved in ecology research and is a co-author of a published ecology paper. Immediately after college Miss Werbin spent a year in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences at KU Medical Center. During her time in this program she worked in biomedical labs helping further research in developmental biology and neuropharmacology. During this time Miss Werbin felt God calling her to education, and will finish a graduate program this year.

Her passion is to bring the joy of music to every student who walks into her classroom. About Miss Zumbrunnen

Liza Zumbrunnen (“Miss Z”) teaches Band. She has taught trumpet and piano lessons for over 8 years and has played trumpet for 18 years. She still teaches private music lessons as well as arranges music, performs at her church, and plays with her brass group, “Gaelic Brass,” at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival.
