Meet Our 2019 HS Basketball Coaches

The Heritage Christian Academy Athletics Department is pleased to announce the lineup of next year’s high school boys basketball coaches.

Mr. Evan Burns | Varsity Head Coach

Coach Burns joined the Pittsburg State University men’s basketball coaching staff as a student assistant during his senior year at Pitt State and served as a graduate assistant for the next two seasons. In 2018–2019 he served as JV head coach and varsity assistant for the Piper High School boys basketball program. In that season the team won the state 4A championship for the first time in school history while setting a record for most wins (21) in school history. Evan also currently coaches high school and 7th grade basketball with Livin’ The Dream (LTD).

Mr. Burns earned his bachelors in Business Administration and Marketing (2016) and his Master of Science in Health, Human Performance and Recreation (2018) from Pittsburg State University. He hails from Kansas City, KS.

Mr. Brett Busenitz | Varsity Assistant Coach, JV Head Coach

Mr. Busenitz served as junior high and JV head basketball coach at Westminster Christian Academy from 2006–2009. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Kansas State University (2006) and his Master of Science in Curriculum and Teaching from the University of Kansas (2019). Mr. Busenitz has taught at Westminster/HCA for 13 years. His wife Sarah, two daughters and son live in Overland Park.

I’m so thankful to be part of the HCA family. I’m thrilled for this new opportunity to work with coach Evans, coach Wheeler, and our student athletes. I look forward to building our basketball program in a way that honors God. —Brett Busenitz

Mr. Shannon Wheeler | Varsity Assistant Coach

Mr. Wheeler has coached middle school football for two years, middle school basketball for one year, middle school volleyball for one year, and high school cross country for one year. He has also worked as a shooting instructor (rifle) for eight years. 

Mr. Wheeler earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Northwest Missouri State University and a Master of Science in Education from MidAmerica Nazarene University. He has been teaching for 22 Years (6 at Center Elementary/Everest Middle School; 16 at Westminster/Heritage). He and his wife Rebekah (22 years) have four children and live in De Soto.

I am very excited at the opportunity to coach HCA basketball. My goal in coaching these players is to help them reach their God-given potential. Working together, I am certain the Lord will be honored in what we accomplish.
