“Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!” —Psalm 150:3–6 (ESV)
There are a number of opportunities for students to develop and showcase their instrumental music abilities while deepening their appreciation for various types of instrumental music. These instrumental groups perform at a variety of events throughout the year. Solo competitions are also available.
Concert Band includes 6th, 7th and 8th grade instrumental students though the grades sometimes rehearse and perform separately (i.e., 6th and 7th/8th). Students work through the selected method book and learn to warm up properly, sight-read music, master musical literature and become better musicians. The group performs two to five pieces per semester concert and participates in local music festivals.
Pep Band consists of the High School Band and Jazz Band. It is open to any 7th–12th grader that wishes to participate. Pep Band plays pop, classic rock and other genre hits to help “pep” up the basketball game environment for the Spring semester home games.
Jazz Band is open to any current Concert Band or Honors Band student as an extra ensemble. The group meets once a week every Tuesday morning from 7:00–7:40 a.m. Jazz Band prepares one to two Jazz-style pieces for each concert and helps with the Pep Band during Basketball season.
Honors Band includes all High School Band students. These students work each day to develop quality tone, effective articulation and smooth flexibility, and to master technique on their particular instruments. The group performs two to five pieces per semester concert and participates in local music festivals. They are also in charge of Pep Band, provide music for Commencement, and are eligible to participate in solo competitions and audition for District and State Bands.
The Strings Ensemble is a small ensemble that meets once a week before school and is open to all grade levels. The group prepares ensemble pieces to take to local music festivals and performs one to three pieces at the semester concerts/showcases.
Heritage Christian Academy offers a Fine Arts Diploma track for students wishing to specialize in a particular fine art.
